17 November 2026 · 18:30

CaixaForum Barcelona, la Font de la Guatlla, Sants-Montjuïc

Many experienced the fall of communism in Eastern Europe as the definitive victory of freedom and liberal democracy. Yet those peaceful revolutions — except the one that ended Ceaușescu's regime in Romania — also carried nationalist impulses and expectations that were sometimes met and sometimes frustrated. This session analyses the historical meaning of 1989-1991, its contradictory legacy and what those who survived the collapse of a system can tell us. By Monika Zgustova, a writer and translator known for essays and novels exploring the history and culture of Eastern Europe, with particular attention to historical memory and everyday life under totalitarian regimes.
