“Set at an unspecified time between the 17th and 18th centuries, Rita Azevedo Gomes's new literary adaptation portrays a young foreign woman who waits for years in a decrepit mansion for her husband to return from the war. While giving the narrative a phlegmatic pace, the Portuguese director displays theatrical manners, hieratic characters, visual anachronisms, moments of surrealism and various images evoking Vermeer's paintings. The Portuguese Woman is also a celebration of a woman who holds on to her principles and her freedom in the face of a society intent on keeping her prisoner” (Nando Salvà - El Periódico).
