Activity Series 'La Festa del Sol'

At Vil·la Urània we want to revive the Festa del Sol that Barcelona astronomer Josep Comas i Solà (1868-1937) used to organise to celebrate the summer solstice. We therefore bring science and art together and propose a wide range of activities for all audiences to enjoy the good weather. The Festes del Sol were well-known celebrations organised by SADEYA, Sociedad Astronómica de España y América, held in the early 20th century to celebrate the arrival of summer. These festivities combined science and art: scientific lectures —generally related to astronomy— alternated with more recreational performances in which the artistic dimension played a prominent role. In Barcelona, the promoter of these festivities was astronomer Josep Comas i Solà, director of Observatori Fabra and president of SADEYA. This science communicator was closely connected with Barcelona's social life and, specifically, with Vil·la Urània, which is now a cultural facility largely devoted to science communication. The Festes del Sol, however, originated in Paris through Camille Flammarion, founder of the Société Astronomique de France and a friend of Josep Comas.
