'An Archaeological History of Perfume' Cultural Workshop *NEW*

Teacher: Victòria Medina. Since antiquity, humans have had an imprecise relationship with their own sense of smell. Unlike animals, we spend considerable time and effort suppressing body odour and replacing it with aromas from plants or spices. Beyond the countless smells produced by the human body, fragrances have also culturally shaped our history. Their use in religious and funerary rituals is one of many examples that can be documented even through archaeology. We will explore the relationship between perfume and archaeology. From the discovery of bottles, ointments and aromatic oils to cultural practices, texts and trade, perfume becomes a valuable source for interpreting life and customs in the past.
