"Anselm Kiefer" Exhibition

Through his work, Anselm Kiefer reflects on what it means to be an avant-garde artist in the 20th century. Because of the ironic and provocative nature of his practice, he accepts and embraces the notion of the modern artist standing outside society, questioning its history, rules, taboos, myths and ideas about art. As a result of these concerns, he has produced art centred on Germanic themes, values and symbols. His insistence on reopening emotional wounds and emphasising cultural losses is a way of exploring his own heritage and identity. Kiefer therefore believes not only in art's regenerative power, but also in the possibility of establishing a dialogue between history and civilisations, as an antidote to the horror of human history and as a search for a path towards reconciliation. Kiefer's vitrines are condensed symbols and often combine opposing concepts: they are transparent and dense, light and heavy, while the objects they contain are at once easily recognisable and enigmatic. Kiefer uses materials as varied as lead, cement, glass, stones, wire, pieces of fabric, tree roots and burned books, representing ideas such as remembrance, renewal, hope and loss. The collected…
