Antifascist Varieties Exhibition

The Antifascist Varieties Exhibition is one of the central strands of the Portabella: agent provocador programme. It is a comprehensive and complex project taking as its starting point Concert irregular (1968), a stage work that was the first joint creation by the triangle formed by Brossa, Portabella and musician Carles Santos. Concert irregular premiered at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence —to mark Joan Miró's 75th birthday— and had a second performance at Teatre Romea in Barcelona, becoming a quintessential work of both the aesthetic and political ruptures characteristic of the worldwide uprisings of 1968. A detailed examination of these two productions —and a third staged in New York the following year—, which provoked sharply contrasting reactions among audiences and the media, allows us to reconsider several aspects of the problems now facing radical arts and critical cultural practices in a situation of systemic crisis polarised between the proliferation of emancipated subjectivities in revolt and the violent rise of supremacism.
