He was one of the leading figures of Modernisme and one of the most influential architects in the history of world architecture. He began studying architecture at the recently founded Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona, completing his training in 1878. His work is characterised by great originality and a profound connection with science, the laws of nature, history, religion and Catalan culture. Gaudí began his career creating practical and utilitarian works, but always developed a distinctive style that took shape in a generation of organic forms, applying the laws of nature, Greek art, medieval art, science and the most advanced technology of his time to architecture. He introduced innovations in construction and design, using industrialised materials such as iron and integrating it into wrought metalwork, as well as trencadís (mosaic made from broken ceramic pieces) to protect non-flat surfaces, while using geometry to create forms evoking harmony and balance. His most emblematic works include the Sagrada Família, Parc Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera).
