"Asunción Bastida" Exhibition

DHub presents an exhibition reclaiming the figure of Asunción Bastida Pibernat (Barcelona, 1902–1995), a key creator in 20th-century fashion and the only woman who belonged to the most prominent core of Spanish Haute Couture. Despite the recognition she achieved in her time, her name was gradually overshadowed by male figures such as Cristóbal Balenciaga and Pedro Rodríguez. The exhibition recovers her career and places her where she belongs in the history of design and fashion. Bastida's career was marked by personal and professional obstacles. Her father forbade her from working in dressmaking, and it was not until her marriage to Marcelino Mases that she was able to begin her creative path. In 1926 she opened a knitwear business on Carrer Girona in Barcelona and, a few years later, took part in the 1929 Exposició Internacional de Barcelona, where she helped give visibility to fashion made in Catalonia. During the 1930s she consolidated her haute-couture house, first on Gran Via in Barcelona and later with a branch in Madrid.
