'Aurèlia Muñoz’s Bird-Kites' Exhibition

Coinciding with the start of the Aurèlia Muñoz Centenary, three reconstructions of sculptures from the Ocells-estels (1982) series, one of the artist's most emblematic, can be seen in the MACBA atrium. Muñoz conceived these pieces to be installed high above the ground and to enter into dialogue with natural light, conditions faithfully reproduced in the current presentation. In 1982, the artist showed the series at Madrid's Palacio de Cristal and Barcelona's Drassanes Reials —two spaces of exceptional scale and lighting qualities— and the group was later selected for the 11th International Tapestry Biennial in Lausanne (1983). Muñoz intended the works to fly over places and people, encouraging an expansion of space both outdoors and inside large buildings. At MACBA, these works will occupy the atrium of the Edifici Meier for much of the commemorative year before migrating to different locations around Catalonia. Aurèlia Muñoz Ventura was born in Barcelona on 13 April 1926 and, after devoting more than five decades to artistic practice across multiple media, is now recognised as one of the key figures for understanding the evolution of contemporary art in our time.
