‘Barcelona 1936, International Music Capital: The IMS Congress and the ISCM Festival’ Exhibition
26 October 2026 – 31 December 2026 · 11:00
Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya, el Raval, Ciutat Vella
On Monday 26 October 2026, at 6 pm, the Sala de la Caritat of the Biblioteca de Catalunya will host the opening of the exhibition "Barcelona 1936, International Music Capital: The IMS Congress and the ISCM Festival", which can be seen in the Espai Zero, in the Library's lobby. The exhibition's curator, musicologist Igor Contreras, will set in context the two events that made Barcelona an international music capital in 1936: the 3rd Congress of the International Musicological Society (IMS) and the 14th Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). Drawing on the collections held at the Biblioteca de Catalunya, especially those of Higini Anglès and Robert Gerhard, the exhibition reconstructs this exceptional episode in Barcelona's cultural history and offers a fresh reading of these events and of the personal, institutional and intellectual networks that made them possible. The event will be introduced by the director of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, Eugènia Serra. Free admission, limited capacity. The event can also be followed via streaming on the Biblioteca de Catalunya's YouTube channel.
