Sala Moragues, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Ciutat Vella
May 1945. The war ends in Europe and a new era begins. In Barcelona, however, the changes are still imperceptible. The city remains subject to the Franco dictatorship, to the control of its political and administrative apparatus and to a daily life marked by repression, scarcity and lack of freedom. Nevertheless, the new international context begins to have effects on the city too. For various reasons, which this seminar aims to help explore, groups, spaces and initiatives of very different kinds become active again. Francoists, groups on the fringes of the regime and anti-Francoists sense that something has begun to change and try to adapt or exploit the cracks that are opening up, both in official spaces and underground. From 1946 onwards, new signs of cultural, civic and political activism can be detected. This seminar sets out to delve into some of the lesser-known aspects of these years and analyse the transformations that, beneath an apparent immobility, gradually changed the life of the city, culminating in the unprecedented protest of the tram strike and the general strike of March 1951.
