Barcelona will be the first European Capital of Local Retail in 2026. Its selection as the first European host city for local retail and as a showcase of good practice for European cities was built on a joint bid by public administrations and the city's retail organisations, based on strengths and good practices across four assessment criteria: retail sustainability; support for entrepreneurship and links with the community; digitalisation; and the city's attractiveness and vitality. The programme of activities is being finalised, with more than 100 activities already outlined, including trade fairs, markets, workshops, studies, meetings and exchanges with other European cities. In its bid, Barcelona highlighted as one of its main strengths its comprehensive strategy to reinforce its own model of sustainable, innovative and resilient local retail, recognising it as an essential driver of the city's economic, social and urban development. The jury recognised a bid that stands out particularly for the strength of a dynamic retail sector present in every neighbourhood, capable of combining tradition and innovation, contributing to the city's economy, social cohesion and urban fabric.…
