Indigenous funk, hip-hop consciousness and punk-rock energy fuse into something wholly original and deeply rooted. Their motto is clear: "Music for the people, by the people, with the people." From humble beginnings rehearsing in a shipping container next to the church where Desmond Tutu organised the escape of some of the most hunted anti-apartheid activists, they kept believing in their dream of self-determination and empowerment. Today they play the leading international festivals, including Glastonbury, Roskilde, Afropunk Brooklyn, WOMAD, Sziget and Couleur Café, among many others. In 2023 BCUC received the prestigious WOMEX Artist Award, an honour usually reserved for artists with longer-established careers, in recognition of their bold work and live performances of exceptional intensity.
