The present is the time that lays claim to us. No longer the past, which we have too often viewed with nostalgia, nor the future, which we have imagined as excessively apocalyptic, but the time we share now, marked by challenges that today are entirely unavoidable. In cities, these challenges — and the tensions they bring — are more visible. Yet it is also in cities that alternatives can be tried out. The 2026 Biennial proposes thinking about the now and the here — the present and cities — at a crossing point intended as an invitation to turn the urban square into a public, shared one. And in doing so, to attempt answers to the questions running through this edition's programme: how can we foster solidarity against the onslaught of neoliberalism? With what tools can the city become a bastion of democratic resistance to authoritarianism? How can we carry out practices that improve the material and symbolic conditions of our life in the city? This is the ultimate aim of the 2026 Biennial: to venture answers to these questions, in the confidence that plural dialogue can create unforeseen alliances built on solidarity, and in the conviction that well-founded, critical and collective…
