"Branford Marsalis Quartet & Dianne Reeves Celebrate John Coltrane" Concert
3 November 2026 · 20:30
Palau de la Música Catalana, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Ciutat Vella
The centenary of John Coltrane, born on 23 September 1926, provides the starting point for a meeting between two iconic figures in contemporary jazz: Branford Marsalis and Dianne Reeves. The saxophonist and vocalist have taken as their reference one of the most distinctive recordings in Coltrane's discography, the album he made with singer Johnny Hartman in 1963. It may not be one of the saxophonist's canonical records such as A Love Supreme, but it is unquestionably the soundtrack for many people who have curled up more than once listening to the tenderness of Hartman's voice alongside Coltrane. The challenge for Dianne Reeves and Branford Marsalis's quartet (with Joey Calderazzo, Eric Revis and Justin Faulkner) is therefore considerable, and it will also result in an album due for release on Blue Note this autumn. Barcelona is also the project's only Iberian date and the start of its European tour. Branford Marsalis, tenor and soprano saxophones. Joey Calderazzo, piano. Reuben Rogers, double bass. Justin Faulkner, drums. Special guest: Dianne Reeves, vocals.
Part of the programme: 58th Barcelona International Jazz Festival. 58è Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona: 48 activities in Barcelona, from September 29 to December 23.
