'Catalonia before Catalonia: Power, War and Society from the Origins to 1714' Workshop *NEW*

The history of Catalonia is a long and complex process shaped by the convergence of peoples, cultures and forms of power that, over the centuries, created a distinctive political and social reality within Mediterranean Europe. From Iberian societies and Romanisation to the consolidation of medieval counties, the expansion of the Crown of Aragon and the conflicts of the early modern period, Catalonia's past helps explain the origins of many institutions, identities and tensions that have endured to the present. In this course we will approach this historical evolution from an accessible yet rigorous perspective, focusing particularly on the first great period of Catalan history: from its earliest antecedents to 1714. Through a cross-cutting perspective, we will analyse the formation of feudal society, Mediterranean expansion, the economic and urban transformations of the Late Middle Ages, and the social and political conflicts that shaped the relationship between Catalonia and the Hispanic monarchy.
