"Chopin Piano Concerto" Concert with Cristian Macelaru and David Khrikuli

Bedřich Smetana's symphonic poem The Moldau opens the concert with a powerful evocation of landscape and the Czech composer's national identity. Part of the Má vlast cycle, the score follows the river from its source to its triumphant arrival in Prague, pausing for nocturnal episodes and peasant dances. Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 displays the Polish composer's most personal voice through eloquently lyrical writing. In what was actually his second contribution to the concerto genre —despite the numbering that became established— the young David Khrikuli's piano sings, sighs and expands while the orchestra accompanies elegantly and outlines majestic settings that allow it to soar. The second half presents Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 3. Unmistakably post-Romantic and composed during his American exile, it reveals a language marked by nostalgia: the shadow of the past nevertheless coexists with the construction of a luminous present under Cristian Macelaru's direction.
