Robert Gerhard's Concertino for String Orchestra, conceived between 1927 and 1928, stands out for its transparent and dynamic writing within classical forms while also reflecting the influence of atonality. Despite its refined balance, it anticipates the distinctive voice of one of the most significant Catalan composers. Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, written in the full flush of his creative youth —it was actually the first concerto he composed chronologically— places the piano at the centre of an essentially lyrical discourse that seems to spring from the soul. Jan Lisiecki will tackle a solo part alternating poetic introspection with virtuosic brilliance, while the orchestra provides the ideal framework for communicating this intimate truth. Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, which Wagner described as the “apotheosis of the dance”, will close the programme. Celebrated for its almost obsessive rhythmic character —also in a darker vein, as shown by the ostinato of the Allegretto—, the symphony reaches a finale of Dionysian exaltation.
