Culture remains a space of conflict and of the creation of meaning and symbolic power. We are living through a moment of accelerated change and deep tensions that mark the end of an era. We need critical tools to help us dismantle the clichés issuing from new economic, media and political powers that are ever more convinced that everything is permitted to them and that there are no limits. And, in doing so, to defend the singularity of the human condition. Co-organised with: La Maleta de Portbou. 14 September Lecture 'How can the waste land be cultivated?' After two world wars, we were supposed to have learned the lessons of history and an era of peace and prosperity was expected for the world. And yet here we are in the third decade of the 21st century, a digital age in which the question of how the waste land can be cultivated becomes more urgent than ever. 28 September Lecture 'Can we separate the work from the author?' Can and should an author's words and actions, however controversial, be separated from their artistic or intellectual output?
