'Deixa fer, deixar passar' Exhibition

In its full form, the title phrase is «Laissez faire et laissez passer, le monde va de lui même» (“Let it be, let it pass, the world goes by itself”), a French expression popularised in the 18th century in reference to economic freedom and free-market policies. But which world goes by itself? The one we have naturalised as universal and neutral: a matrix built from male, white and heterosexual experience. The expression claims the freedom of what Bell Hooks identified as the invisibility of privilege. What we perceive as “the norm” or as “universal” is precisely what prevents us from recognising the privileged position from which it is constructed. Although the expression suggests freedom, it conceals the fact that economic growth is based on unequal structures, extractive dynamics and practices of social control. The artists from the Programa de Residències SAC-FiC 2025, Maria Kastillejof, Daniel Cao and Pol Pintó, present work developed during their residency. Their practices converge in investigating and highlighting the mechanisms of social control and privilege that sustain this world we are supposedly meant to “let be, let pass”.
