Aurèlia Muñoz. Ens traces a comprehensive journey through the work of a figure who is absolutely central to understanding contemporary textile art both within and beyond Catalonia. Muñoz's early collages, influenced by Surrealism and Gothic art, and her large pictorial embroideries give way to an unprecedented selection of large macramé structures from institutional collections in Spain, Europe and the United States. Her emblematic kite sculptures and later installations made with handmade paper also play a key role in the exhibition, which likewise includes a vast selection of drawings and models never shown before. Despite the artist's early links to movements such as Nouvelle Tapisserie and l'Escola Catalana del Tapís, Muñoz's practice transcends the fields of weaving, fibre and craft. Combining ancestral techniques with contemporary resources, Muñoz responded to the emerging crises of the post-industrial world, paying attention to their impact on terrestrial, aquatic and aerial ecosystems, which emerge as major motifs in her work.
