To mark the Any Aurèlia Muñoz, Museu del Disseny - DHub presents an exhibition devoted to the artist's early textile works, revealing one of the key figures in understanding the renewal of contemporary textile art in Catalonia and its international reach. The exhibition brings together three pieces from the Museu collection that provide an insight into an early and decisive stage in Muñoz's career: the 1961 tapestry La Barcelona gòtica, made with printed burlap, and two table covers from 1962, designed by the artist and printed by José Duran on screen-printed jute burlap. These works demonstrate her early interest in the expressive qualities of materials, textures and the visual possibilities of textile work. Trained at l'Escola d'Arts Aplicades and l'Escola Massana in Barcelona, Aurèlia Muñoz Ventura (Barcelona, 1926-2011) developed an artistic practice spanning more than five decades, renewing ancestral techniques such as embroidery, knotting —or macramé— and papermaking by bringing them into dialogue with the avant-garde movements of her time.
