"Falla’s Atlántida" Concert with Kent Nagano and OCNE

La cathédrale engloutie is the poetic title of one of Claude Debussy's piano preludes —literally, “the sunken cathedral”—, heard here in José Luis Turina's recent and imaginative orchestration, which transfers one of the French composer's most evocative visions to the symphonic realm: the music progresses slowly, as though sketching the image of a submerged building amid resonances and dreamlike harmonies. Using similar musical tools, La mer unfolds as an orchestral fresco of great timbral richness: the movement of the water can almost be perceived thanks to the breadth of its sonic imagination. Debussy builds a sensory experience based on colour, light and continuous flow; an experience that gives way, in the second half of the concert, to Manuel de Falla's great staged cantata Atlántida. Ernesto Halffter completed the monumental and visionary work —based on the poem by Jacint Verdaguer— that Falla left unfinished.
