Tenor Francesc Viñas had always wanted to create an initiative that could help young singers with the difficulties of beginning a singing career, which he himself had experienced. Dr Jacint Vilardell made this a reality in 1963 with the foundation of the Concurs Internacional de Cant Tenor Viñas. Gran Teatre del Liceu immediately formed a connection with the competition, which has continued to this day. With the collaboration of some of the world's leading theatres, the Teatre has organised sixty-three editions, involving more than 17,000 contestants, and has introduced many names that have become and remain reference points in international opera. This year we celebrate the 64th competition and hope the results will be as successful as in previous editions.
