'Introduction to Chinese Fantasy Genres' Lecture

5 November 2026 · 19:45

Fabra i Coats - Fàbrica de Creació, Sant Andreu, Sant Andreu

Interest in Asian fiction is growing and, little by little, Chinese audiovisual productions and novels are becoming popular in our country. What's more, authors such as Sue Lynn Tan and other writers with Asian roots are beginning to draw on traditional Chinese fantasy for their works, to the point that fantasy genres are now dominant in danmei novels and series. Experts in East Asian culture Oriol Estrada and Maria Parra, through their project Els Mestres del Bambú, offer an introduction to Chinese fantasy genres, with examples of series, novels and comics available here. In this lecture they will help distinguish between wuxia, xianxia and xuanhuan, three of the main genres of Chinese fantasy, which are inspiring more and more artists. Their origins will also be explained so that all readers, whether or not they have already ventured into Chinese literature, can learn a little more. Speakers: Oriol Estrada. Maria Parra.
