Jakob Dreyer Mood Quartet – Presenting Roots and Things. Double bassist and composer Jakob Dreyer, a German based in New York, arrives with Roots and Things, his third album as a leader and the most personal of his career. After his two volumes of Songs, Hymns and Ballads, Dreyer presents a renewed quartet, a new sound world and a statement of intent: a return to swing, to energy and to pulse. For this new adventure, Dreyer brings together a first-rate team: the brilliant tenor player Tivon Pennicott and the versatile Kenn Salters on drums. Together they build an album of 15 original tracks combining urgent swing, powerful grooves and introspective ballads, interspersed with brief interludes that work as small emotional reorientations. Roots and Things is a celebration of the double bass as foundation and musical identity, but also a step forward in the evolution of an artist who, since 2014, has become a constant presence on the New York jazz scene. Drawing on Paul Chambers, NHØP, Wayne Shorter and Bill Evans, Dreyer delivers a deep, vibrant album full of personality. A tribute to roots and to everything that makes them grow.
