Show title: La Barcelona Flamenca. Flamenco - Barcelona. By now, no one can ignore that flamenco forms part of Barcelona's cultural history. The relationship is reciprocal: Barcelona itself also acquired major importance in flamenco art very early on. Just as, for example, blues was born in the Mississippi Delta but cannot be understood without mentioning other places, the map of flamenco —with an indisputable place of origin— also extends beyond its original cardinal points. As early as the 19th century, it was said that the finest flamenco shows took place in the so-called “Cafés Cantantes” or in the city's theatres. Decades later, migration from Murcia, Andalusia and Extremadura strengthened this musical connection in another way. Today, many other towns in Barcelona province also have essential relevance. In the first half of the 20th century, Barcelona was one of the major destinations for any flamenco artist. And in Somorrostro was born the greatest flamenco-dance legend of all time: Carmen Amaya, who paved the way for other legendary dancers including La Chana, La Singla and La Chunga.
