"LAIES - Les invisibilitzades" Exhibition

An exhibition that, coinciding with the La Mercè festivities, revisits the legend of Santa Eulàlia to reflect on the invisibility of children. There will also be a very special surprise. Santa Eulàlia was replaced by La Mercè as Barcelona's main Festa Major. This change was driven not only by economic and religious motives but also political ones: the aim was to weaken a symbol of Barcelona resistance and rebellion. The story of Santa Eulàlia of Barcelona appears to have been inspired by the one from Mérida. In both cases, a girl defies established power to defend the freedom to practise her beliefs. In retaliation, she was tortured and paraded through the city before being executed. During this public punishment, a weather phenomenon covered her, shielding her from people's gaze. When the weather is bad during La Mercè, it is said that Santa Eulàlia is sad because she has been forgotten. Curiously, the same element that helped conceal her is what now reminds us that she was there. She is often depicted as a woman rather than the girl she actually was.
