'Learn to Sew with a Machine: Beginner' Workshop

In this workshop you will learn how to thread a sewing machine and understand how it works, including its buttons and levers, its different parts, types of needles and threads, and the basics of different fabrics and materials and where to buy them. You will also learn basic stitches, standard and blind or French seams, and how to sew straight lines, curves and zigzags. You will practise backstitching and learn how to use an iron to improve finishes. Finally, you will discover how to make hems, simple or patch pockets and insert elastic, through a range of exercises and projects. Materials for the first day: a basic sewing kit with fabric scissors, thread, tape measure, seam ripper and needles. Also bobbin case, bobbins, universal presser feet and sewing-machine needles, pencil, paper for notes and scraps of fabric from home. Participants are advised not to buy these until the workshop is confirmed. Led by Mavi Hita.
