Narcís Comadira (Girona, 1942), poet in residence for the Gran Teatre del Liceu's 2026-2027 season, is an essential figure in contemporary Catalan culture. In his work, word and image coexist as complementary forms of the same act of knowledge. A poet, essayist, translator and painter, Comadira has developed a visual practice that remains in constant dialogue with his writing, sharing its rigour, restraint and deeply reflective view of reality. His painting belongs to a tradition of critical classicism, far removed from both stridency and gratuitous gesture. Still lifes, landscapes and architecture are constructed with a formal austerity that evokes permanence and sedimented time. Colour —measured, sober, often primary— acts as breathing space, while composition reveals an almost moral attention to the weight of each element. For Comadira, painting is an exercise in order, a way of establishing fair relationships between things. Far from any idealised nostalgia, his painting offers a lucid view of the world, conscious of its fragility.
