"Nine Waves" Exhibition

On the night of the last Saturday in August, at A Lanzada beach (Galicia), women wishing to become pregnant enter the sea and allow nine waves to break over their abdomen. This fertility ritual is repeated every year, turning water and the movement of the waves into a symbol of renewal, life and hope. According to the World Health Organization, infertility is a disorder that prevents pregnancy after 12 months of trying. Despite its importance, it has historically been little explored because it concerns an absence (the inability to conceive), develops in women's bodies (a historically marginalised group), and is generally experienced in silence (it is a taboo subject). Nine Waves is a personal account of my years of infertility and of searching, waiting, ritual and uncertainty, but told from a place of hope and light. It seeks to make visible a little-known reality that affects and will continue to affect future generations: in 2050, 41% of men will be infertile and assisted-reproduction techniques will be necessary to conceive.
