"Ouka Leele. Barcelona 1978–1980" Exhibition

Ouka Leele, the artistic name of Bárbara Allende Gil de Biedma (Madrid, 1957–2022), was a key figure in contemporary Spanish photography and one of the most representative visual artists of Spain's democratic Transition. With a free and experimental visual language, she broke down the boundaries between photography, painting and performance, and was also an original and sensitive poet. Thanks to the involvement of Maria Rosenfeldt, the artist's daughter and custodian of the Ouka Leele archive, the RocioSantaCruz gallery brings together and presents for the first time in exhibition form a group of photographs from the Peluquería series and other works created during the artist's time in Barcelona. The project is based on the study of more than 600 negatives and contact sheets from the period, many previously unseen. This material is complemented by unpublished texts and poems by Ouka Leele from the archive of Ajoblanco magazine. Throughout her career, Ouka Leele maintained a close relationship with Barcelona, where she lived from August 1978 until 1980.
