The philosophical and artistic reflection that emerged as Impressionism was left behind opened an enormous range of expressive possibilities and new conceptions of painting and art itself. This reflection coincided with new ways in which Europeans understood themselves: a new art for a new individual. The result was the different pictorial avant-gardes (Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, etc.), with their works and manifestos, in one of the most exciting periods in history.
