Parenting Talk "Over-gifted Children: Finding the Balance between Desire, Excess and the Meaning of Gifts"

17 November 2026 · 18:00

Centre Cívic Sarrià, Sarrià, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

When Christmas arrives, we often find ourselves surrounded by an avalanche of gifts. We want to get it right, compensate or avoid falling short, and children ultimately receive so much that desire and play are diluted by excess and saturation. This talk is an invitation to reflect on consumption, connection and the true value of a gift beyond objects. To better understand play, its meaning and the role adults have in it. We will discuss: • The impact of excess on play and the capacity for desire. • How to choose less and choose better, with judgement and purpose. • The symbolic value of gifts and shared time. • How to support children's desires without falling into either guilt or an “anything goes” approach. • A session for simplifying, recovering the pleasure of giving with intention and remembering that less is often more. Led by Carme and Clàudia from Jugar i Jugar, who have spent more than eighteen years defending the profound value of play and the need to preserve it.

Part of the programme: 'Xerrades de criança' Series. Cicle 'Xerrades de criança: 3 activities in Barcelona, from September 22 to November 17. All free.
