'Picasso Cyprus: Encounters with Mediterranean Ceramics' Exhibition

Although Picasso never visited Cyprus, his relationship with Cypriot antiquities is particularly revealing. The artist encountered these works through European museum collections such as those of the Louvre and through specialist publications of his time. The exhibition's guiding thread is a reflection on the way Pablo Picasso perceived the formal and symbolic aspects of pre-Classical Cypriot art. This is not a simple formal appropriation, but a profound fascination with the hybridisation of styles and the creativity of this ancient art, characterised by the fusion of human and animal figures as well as by a distinctive playful and expressive quality. The exhibition will present a selection of works from museums and collections across Europe, including a significant representation from the Museu Picasso de Barcelona's own collections and the Departament d'Antiguitats de Xipre. Curated by Emmanuel Guigon, Androula Michael and Efthymia Alphas, archaeologist and head of the Museu de Xipre, with the participation of Eftychia Zachariou, curator at the DoA.
