'Reading the Corpus Christi Procession. Objects for Storytelling and Prayer, Honour, Assertion and Feeling' Exhibition

The exhibition's curator, art historian Albert Cortés, offers a perspective on the Corpus Christi procession through the objects and other physical elements that take part in it. All the city's institutions, civil and ecclesiastical, came together in a major celebration to pay homage to the sacramental Christ. But the procession was also an occasion for display and ostentation, for manifesting authority and power, and for seeing and being seen. All these aspects were and remain present in Barcelona's Corpus celebrations through various objects that danced, sounded, burned or were simply carried in order to communicate to spectators, explicitly or symbolically, who was carrying them, what their place in the procession was and what they were meant to represent. For more than 700 years, Barcelona residents have added, modified or removed these objects up to the present day; but whether they belong to our present or to a distant past, they all speak about forms of relationship: between God and the people, between neighbours and communities, between social estates and sexes.
