'Ricard Viñes in Paris. A Pianist’s Diary' Exhibition

Like many other Catalan artists at the end of the 19th century, pianist Ricard Viñes (Lleida, 1875 – Barcelona, 1943) moved to Paris to continue his studies and complete his musical training. He arrived in October 1887, aged just twelve, accompanied by his mother and siblings. The Viñes family settled there amid considerable difficulties. A few weeks after arriving, he was admitted as an auditing student at the Paris Conservatoire. At almost the same time, Viñes began writing a personal diary that forms the narrative thread of this exhibition. The young pianist soon entered some of the most active and innovative artistic, musical and literary circles of the period. As he discovered the city, Paris became a decisive space in his intellectual and artistic development. Among the Catalan artists who moved there, Viñes was one of those who established the longest and deepest relationship with the city, making French culture one of the central reference points of his career.
