"Ryoan-ji" Concert, the Japanese Garden of John Cage and Frederic Amat

Cage and Amat enter into dialogue at the Liceu through Ryoan-ji, a meditation between sound, silence and matter. “In silence there is always something that responds,” John Cage wrote, and it is precisely this secret, imperceptible yet persistent response that takes form in Ryoan-ji, one of his most refined and meditative works. Inspired by Kyoto's rock garden —a space where time evaporates and the gaze dissolves into stillness—, Cage creates music that does not advance but breathes. A constellation of scattered, almost mineral sounds that seem to arise from the air itself, as though they were the murmur of an ancient world revealed only to those who know how to listen. In this presentation at the Liceu, the piece takes on an unusual visual dimension through the intervention of Frederic Amat, an artist who has learned to engage with Cage's thinking through the poetic materiality of colour and form. Rather than illustrating or literally translating the Zen landscape, his presentation becomes an organic extension of the sound: textures evoking sediment, pigments that seem to emerge from the depths of a submerged garden, and lines that breathe with the same restraint as the music.…
