"Samara Joy" Concert
13 November 2026 · 21:00
Palau de la Música Catalana, Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, Ciutat Vella
Samara Joy made her debut at our festival in 2022 at the Conservatori Liceu, leading a trio of French musicians. She arrived in Barcelona for the first time with the distinction of having won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2019, and indeed confirmed every expectation: a remarkably young and powerful voice unafraid to cite unquestionable influences such as Vaughan herself, Betty Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Carmen McRae. Four years later, Joy (who will have turned 27 just two days earlier!) makes her Palau debut leading a septet, with six Grammy Awards to her name since that now-distant 2022. On her latest album, Portrait, she develops her art at the head of a septet and includes arrangements with her own lyrics (Charles Mingus) as well as music by other influences such as Sun Ra and her mentor Barry Harris. A star has been born, we told ourselves when her 2022 recital ended. It seems our prediction was not far off…
Part of the programme: 58th Barcelona International Jazz Festival. 58è Festival Internacional de Jazz de Barcelona: 48 activities in Barcelona, from September 29 to December 23.
