Enjoy a Sunday breakfast and a lecture on outstanding figures from history. Much has been written and said about Sappho, the poet from the island of Lesbos who conveyed the most piercing feelings of the soul through her verses. Claimed by different groups, today it is difficult to separate the historical figure from the image created by posterity. The lack of information about her life and the loss of much of her literary output account for how little we know about her life and her work. Not long ago, the discovery of new poems forced many opinions about her poetry to change, to the point that people speak of a "new Sappho". So it is a good time to revisit the poet, her life and her poetic work, which goes beyond any label. What really matters is that Sappho is a female voice who speaks of love and heartbreak, of pain and joy, of loneliness and friendship, of memory and presence, universal themes that touch our hearts just as they did some 2,600 years ago. Given by Teresa Magadán, PhD in Ancient History and specialist in Greek history.
