Science Talk "From Molecules to Quantum Computers"

In this talk we will explore how molecules can become key players in quantum technologies. Unlike today's computers, which operate with bits that can only be 0 or 1, quantum computers use qubits, which can exist in several states at once thanks to the quantum-mechanical principle of superposition. We will see how certain molecules, precisely designed in the laboratory, can act as these qubits by exploiting properties such as electron spin. We will also explore how these molecular units can be combined to form logic gates capable of carrying out quantum operations and how they can be arranged in ordered networks. We will explain accessibly what superposition is, why chemistry and physics play a key role, and the main challenges involved in controlling these quantum systems. Finally, we will discuss the potential of this technology, from solving complex problems to revolutionising fields such as medicine and the development of new materials. An opportunity to discover how, at microscopic scale, molecules and quantum materials can make a new generation of devices possible.
