Series 'Seguint el sol. Destapant la mirada'

In "El joc de saber mirar" —a text published in January 1967 in the magazine Cavall Fort—, Antoni Tàpies invited readers to exercise their gaze as a practice for achieving a deeper understanding, with an "open heart", of what surrounds us. The artist insisted on the need for a trained gaze beyond immediacy: one capable of expanding the "field of our vision" and, consequently, "our knowledge". "Look, look deeply! And let yourselves be fully carried away by everything that what we see makes resonate within you (…). It is a game. But playing does not mean doing things 'just because'. (…) By playing… playing, we make our spirit grow, we expand the field of our vision, of our knowledge. By playing… playing, we say things and listen to others, we wake those who have fallen asleep, we help those who do not know how to see or those whose sight has been covered." For Tàpies, this game involved an awakening of consciousness that not only allowed a deeper experience of the artwork, but also transformed our relationship with everyday objects and, ultimately, with the very experience of living.
