'Shanghai Chinese Orchestra' Concert

25 September 2026 · 23:00

Avinguda de la Catedral, el Barri Gòtic, Ciutat Vella

Show title: Colors de la Xina. Do you know what a ruan is, how many strings an erhu has or what a guqin sounds like? At the performance by this prestigious Shanghai ensemble devoted to traditional Chinese music, you will discover a number of instruments that, like our gralla or flabiol, give compositions a unique sound closely tied to their territory. No one is better placed to introduce us to these different and captivating sonorities than the orchestra founded in 1952 as China's first major modern ensemble made up of traditional Chinese instruments. The sound is far more sophisticated than you might imagine. You will hear ancient melodies and Shanghai folk pieces, but bear in mind that the ensemble also performs contemporary compositions and can connect East and West through its sound. All of this, of course, with traditional instruments whose sounds will be completely new to many of our ears.

Part of the programme: Mercè 2026. 103 activities in Barcelona, from September 23 to September 27. All free.
