'Shanghai Conservatory of Music Jazz Ensemble' Concert
23 September 2026 · 21:00
Jardins del Doctor Pla i Armengol, el Guinardó, Horta-Guinardó
Show title: When East Meets West Jazz-Shanghai. Anyone wanting to discover the point where the Western jazz tradition meets and blends with Chinese sounds should come to the concert offered by the Jazz Ensemble of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music as part of the guest-city programme for La Mercè. It is made up of conservatory teachers and students, with a notable contribution from Liu Wenwen, the first doctoral-level performer of the suona, a traditional Chinese wind instrument (sometimes called the “Chinese trumpet”, although its sound is quite different). You will hear how the Conservatory's Jazz Ensemble has developed its own distinctly Shanghainese style of jazz, combining international musical languages with sounds rooted in musical tradition. Avant-garde jazz with an Eastern sensibility, building bridges between cultures. The band's repertoire includes original compositions by figures such as Zhang Xiongguan and Li Xiaochuan, among other representatives of a lively and vibrant contemporary Chinese jazz scene, as well as pieces such as Spain by modern-jazz legend Chick Corea.
Part of the programme: Mercè 2026. 103 activities in Barcelona, from September 23 to September 27. All free.
