"Shostakovich’s Fourth" Concert with Andris Poga

Pēteris Vasks's Chant of Gratefulness is one of the works receiving its premiere this season. This newly created piece will be heard in the country for the first time and belongs to the Latvian composer's characteristic spiritual and meditative language. Known for the austere and restrained nature of his works, he seems to invite inward listening, in which silence and the resonance of the sounds summoned play a structural role. In fierce and compelling contrast, Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 4, written between 1935 and 1936, is one of the most radical and striking scores in his catalogue. Conceived shortly before the Soviet regime's official condemnation —which forced its withdrawal even before the premiere—, it creates a grotesque and tragic universe from the outset, where irony and violence coexist without compromise.
