"Synthetic Biology: Engineering Life" Science Talk

We have known how to read DNA for decades. But what if we could rewrite it? Synthetic biology is the discipline attempting to do exactly that: designing living organisms with new functions by combining tools from biology, engineering and computing. In this talk we will explore the basic principles of this science —how a living organism is programmed, what possibilities this opens and what questions it raises— through a concrete example: the project we are developing as a student team for the international iGEM competition. We are working with a soil bacterium to help Mediterranean vineyards withstand drought. It is a real case showing first-hand how science progresses: through many hypotheses, some failures and, from time to time, unexpected results.
