'Textile Cyanotype' Workshop

Cyanotype is a 19th-century photographic printing process characterised by its Prussian blue colour. In the workshop we will learn the basic principles of this centuries-old technique and how to apply it to textile supports. In the 1st session we will explore the artistic and historical context, learn the basic concepts of the process (photosensitive emulsion, negatives, exposure and development) and experiment on different types of paper. In the 2nd session we will discover the particularities of the process on different textile supports and experiment on different types of fabric, learn which mordants or fixatives to use and the best practical advice for textile conservation. Materials supplement: €10 (includes: watercolour paper, drawing paper, tea bags and scraps of cotton voile, unbleached cotton, denim and cotton jersey, photosensitive emulsion, personalised transparencies using images supplied by workshop participants*, and a PDF handout with all the notes). *To obtain your personalised transparency, a few days before the workshop begins you will receive an email so that you can send us your photograph.
