'The Diary as a Literary Genre' Workshop

Teacher: Esmeralda Berbel. We will explore the diary as an exercise in recording memory, as a way of conveying lived experience through words, and understand the importance of writing as an intimate act: how to narrate what we see and express what we feel. We will take life experience as the starting point for creation. Particular attention will be paid to strategies for breaking monotony, and we will reflect on what turns writing into literary text. Based on readings of excerpts from authors' diaries, practical exercises will be proposed and worked on in class.
