'The Frankfurt Kitchen (1926 – 2026). Design and Gender in the Domestic Space' Exhibition

18 November 2025 – 14 March 2027 · 10:00

Disseny Hub Barcelona, el Parc i la Llacuna del Poblenou, Sant Martí

The Frankfurt Kitchen, designed by Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky in 1926, is one of the most significant examples of the combination of the scientific organisation of work, interwar social policies and the rationalist principles of the modern movement. It also marked the start of a broader process: the application of industrial production methods to the home. Through industrial, graphic and architectural design, the modern home redefined housework, the role of women and ways of living, sparking debates about efficiency, emancipation and control that remain relevant a century later. Coinciding with the centenary of the Frankfurt Kitchen (1926–2026), this exhibition traces this historical process to show how design helped to shape the material and social culture of the contemporary domestic space.
