'The Language of Flowers: Secret Messages from Nature' Exhibition

Biblioteca de Catalunya invites you to visit the exhibition "Angelina Gatell, una vida compromesa", on view at Espai Zero, in the Biblioteca entrance hall, from 23 July to 13 September 2026. The exhibition is curated by Jaume Clarà from the Secció de Col·leccions Generals and Anna Gudayol from the Secció de Manuscrits of Biblioteca de Catalunya. It traces the life and career of Angelina Gatell (Barcelona, 8 June 1926 - Madrid, 7 January 2017), a stage and voice actress, poet, translator and activist in defence of various political, social and cultural causes. Born in Barcelona, her childhood and early youth in republican Catalonia unfolded amid both hope and family financial hardship, with the Spanish Civil War making the situation even more difficult. Her family settled in Valencia in the immediate post-war period, where Gatell became involved in amateur theatre. In 1959 she moved to Madrid, where she worked in televised theatre for the newly established TVE, first as a performer and later as a scriptwriter. Her career in public television was, however, curtailed by her political activism and she had to redirect her professional activity towards voice acting. Gatell wrote poetry…
